Gabriella and Gianna Coppola
After the graduation of Anthony and Marco Coppola from Watertown, the rest of the Middlesex League boys teams breathed a sigh of relief. Anthony went on to star at Wheaton while Marco is currently one of the top players at WPI. Well its the girls side of the league that has to worry now as Gabriella (2014) and Gianna (2015) are following in their brothers' footsteps at WHS. We recently caught up with the two to talk about the season ahead.
BH: Briefly comment on your team’s outlook for next season.
Gabriella - We have everyone back, we're young and scrappy and have a few freshmen coming up, but we should be a tough team.
BH: What are your personal and team goals for this season?
Gabriella - To have a .500 record, win the small Middlesex League, and maybe have a few double doubles.
Gianna - My personal goal is to get more confident with my dribble, especially my non-dominant hand that is my left hand. For the team, I would like to win lots of games, and for everybody to get better as the season goes on.
BH: What teams or players that will present a challenge for you and your team this year?
Gianna - Reading and Woburn are two of the best teams in the league, they will both give us a very tough game, other than that I think that we will hang with every team.
BH: What do you love the most about playing basketball?
Gabriella - I love winning. I’m a huge competitor. But I just love the atmosphere of the games and having your town’s name on your jersey, its something special because everyone knows who you are, and they come to watch your games.
Gianna - I love that feeling when you’re in a tough game and you make good plays, maybe you hit a shot, make a steal, whatever you do to help you’re team win. I like being somebody on the team, and making a difference for those games.
BH: What people have influenced you the most in your basketball career?
Gabriella - My brothers' have influenced me a lot. I strive to be just as good as them, although they have very big shoes to fill. The game comes so easy to them. My sister influences me the most in my basketball career now because I always want to be someone she can look up to. Playing with my sister on the same team is so awesome and I couldn’t be happier having her on the court with me.
Gianna - My brothers have influenced me the most in my basketball career. They are amazing basketball players and they have so much skill. I want to be just as good as they are and I am working to be just as amazing as them
