We are in constant update mode so be sure to check in with us as we finish our updates.
The season is off to another great start and already teams face a crucial point in the season, especially on the boys side, as a slate of big games is scheduled for next week. Let's take a look at some of the top story lines so far and what lays ahead:
It's only January 1st and Dedham is already qualified for the playoffs. Dedham plays in the always tough Bay State Conference and with their two non-league wins over Coyle-Cassidy, Dedham is in via the Sullivan Rule. As many of our loyal followers know, we are not big fans of the rule, but the saving grace in this case is that Dedham is much improved and when they get Bridgewater State commit Kasey Kirby back from injury they will be more than deserving of a playoff spot.
Hitting the Century Mark
Scoring 100 points in a game is always a rare feat, but to do it twice already is even more rare. Newton North scored 109 in a win over Natick and then 102 against a strong Catholic Memorial team. The Tigers are off to a 6-0 start and will face St. John's Prep on January 4th.
Arlington, MA is hooping!
Want to watch some good basketball? Just make a trip to Arlington as Arlington High is off to a 4-0 start and looks to be the favorite in the Middlesex League. At the same time, Arlington Catholic is off to a 4-0 start as well and also has aspirations of a league title. Watch versatile big Matt Wesoloski of AC. The 6'6" post is one of the most underrated players in the state. Both teams face tough league tests coming up as Arlington will face Belmont on 1/6 and AC travels to St. Mary's on 1/5.
NEC Changing of the Guard?
Lynn English has been the class of the Northeast Conference in recent years, but we saw some rumbling last season as Salem has been making a big push to become the team to beat. English is currently 5-1 after a tough loss to Everett while Salem shares the same record, also losing to Everett. The two meet in a critical NEC game 1/6.
It's a Family Thing
Hamilton-Wenham is off to a 4-0 start and they can thank two sophomore brothers. Marcus and Max Zegarowski have been playing well of late and by the way they are the brothers of current Philadelphia 76er's guard and Hamilton native Michael Carter-Williams.
Brighton is Back
After a minor rebuild, Brighton is back to their dominate selves. They are 5-2 with both losses coming to out of state teams (Poly Prep of NY and Christian Brothers of NJ) and have a signature city win already, beating New Mission by 14. Charlestown looms on the schedule next week, 1/6, but they look to be the City League favorite at this point.
Central Catholic is 2-4?
Seems unlikely considering the success Coach Rick Nault has had, but by no means are we counting them out. Look for CC to make the playoffs by the end of this season and be the team nobody wants to play in the always tough D1 North.
